Hello, W.Y.R. neighbors!

Holiday shopping season starts this weekend, and all three towns showed up for it. Saturday is stacked: Youngsville's Deck the Halls craft fair fills Long Mill Elementary, Rolesville High hosts its 12th annual Reindeer Day, Bud's Tavern cooks up a chili cook-off with a vendor market and an 80s band, and Page 158 brings 17 local authors to downtown Wake Forest. Rolesville's Main Street Collective runs a three-day Merry Market at Main from Friday night through Sunday afternoon. On Wednesday, Rolesville honors our veterans at the Blue Star Memorial, and the state playoffs start Friday. Weather note: Friday is a washout, with heavy rain and storms mostly before 5 PM, then it turns sunny and cool for the whole weekend, so plan your shopping for Saturday and bring a jacket for the morning.

In today's edition of The WYRe:

  • Youngsville's Saturday: Deck the Halls at Long Mill Elementary and the Bud's Chili Cook-Off

  • Rolesville's holiday kickoff: Reindeer Day at Rolesville High and the Merry Market at Main

  • Wake Forest's Local Author Book Fair at Page 158 and a Veterans Day ceremony in Rolesville

  • Weather for the week, sports, live music, and more!

Let's get to it.

THE DIGEST

🎄 Deck the Halls Artisan Craft Fair & Pop-Up Market
📍 Long Mill Elementary, 1753 Long Mill Rd, Youngsville | Saturday, November 7 | 9 AM to 3 PM | $3 per person, $5 for two, kids under 12 free

Youngsville's biggest holiday market is back for its fourth year, with indoor and outdoor vendors selling handmade gifts, decor and treats. More than 3,000 people have marked themselves interested on Facebook, so expect a crowd and go early for the best selection.

🌶️ Chili Cook-Off & Vendor Market at Bud's Tavern
📍 Bud's Tavern, 823 Youngsville Blvd S, Youngsville | Saturday, November 7 | Vendors 10 AM to 4 PM, chili tasting starts at noon | $20 tasting tickets (cash preferred)

Ten teams go spoon to spoon at Bud's, and a $20 tasting ticket lets you try them all. Tickets are sold the day of the event, and the proceeds go to local food pantries. A vendor market runs from 10 to 4, and 80s Unleashed plays from 1 to 4. It's an easy second stop after Deck the Halls.

🦌 Reindeer Day at Rolesville High
📍 Rolesville High School, 1099 E Young St, Rolesville | Saturday, November 7 | 9 AM to 4 PM | $5 admission, kids under 10 free

The Rolesville High PTSA's 12th annual Reindeer Day packs the school with local vendors, unique gifts, food and raffles, and every admission supports the Rolesville High PTSA. It's one of Rolesville's biggest days of the year, with more than 1,000 people interested online.

🎁 Merry Market at Main
📍 Main Street Collective, 100 N Main St, Rolesville | Friday, November 6 to Sunday, November 8 | Friday 5 to 8:30 PM, Saturday 10 AM to 5 PM, Sunday 1 to 5 PM | Free

Main Street Collective turns its shop into a three-day holiday market, with its in-store favorites plus pop-up vendors selling vintage finds, handmade goods and holiday decor. Friday is VIP Night with holiday music, appetizers, a photo spot and giveaways. Saturday is the big shopping day and pairs nicely with Reindeer Day across town. Sunday is Cozy Christmas, with coffee, pastries and a warming station.

📚 Local Author Book Fair at Page 158
📍 Page 158 Books, 415 S Brooks St, Wake Forest | Saturday, November 7 | 10 AM to 2 PM | Free

Seventeen local authors set up inside the shop and out in the parking lot, so you can meet the people behind the books and pick up a copy or two. It's an easy way to knock out a few holiday gifts and support writers from right around here. RSVP online if you can (the store appreciates it), then grab lunch downtown. Heads up: South Brooks Street is closed between Roosevelt and Elm for water line work, so follow the detour signs. Brooks Street businesses stay open.

📌 TOWN NOTES

Honor our veterans: Rolesville's Veterans Day ceremony is Wednesday, November 11 at the Blue Star Memorial in front of Town Hall, 502 Southtown Circle, with the call to attention at 10:45 AM and the ceremony at 11 AM. All are welcome, and it moves to the Community Center if it rains. Get More Info Here

Veterans Day is Wednesday, November 11. Wake Forest Town Hall and administrative offices are closed, but trash, recycling and bulk pickup run as normal. Yard waste and loose-leaf pickup skip Wednesday, and crews will squeeze the week's routes into the other four days, so keep leaves and yard waste in separate piles. All Franklin County library branches, including Youngsville, are closed Wednesday too. Get More Info Here

Wake Forest Reservoir access closes Monday, November 9, for the dam and spillway project, and the lake drawdown starts that week. Expect receding shorelines, exposed lakebed and limits on boating and fishing for several weeks. Stay off the exposed mud: it's deep and unstable. Get More Info Here

Set a reminder: registration for Pictures with Santa at the December 5 Downtown Holiday Open House opens Monday, November 9 at 10 AM. Slots are limited and it's not walk-in. Get More Info Here

The Joyner Park playground behind the community center is closed Monday through Friday, November 9 to 13, along with part of the north parking lot, for kudzu removal. Get More Info Here

Have a say on how Wake Forest grows: the Planning Board holds a public comment session on the draft Unified Development Ordinance (the full rewrite of the town's development rules) Tuesday, November 10 at 6 PM at Town Hall. You can read the draft online first. Get More Info Here

Traffic: Wait Avenue (NC 98) is down to one lane with flaggers near Middlegame Way, 9 AM to 4 PM daily through Friday, November 13, and South Brooks Street stays closed between Roosevelt and Elm, 7 AM to 5 PM, through Friday, November 20. Wait Avenue details | Brooks Street details

Heads up: the Wake Forest Comic Book & Toy Expo at Flaherty Park Community Center has been canceled, even though some event sites still list it for Saturday. Get More Info Here

🏈 SPORTS 🏒

Playoff Football Starts Friday

The state playoffs kick off Friday night, and two of our three schools earned a week off. Wake Forest (8-2) won the Northern Six outright, beat Heritage 56-7 last week, and enters the 7A bracket as the No. 6 seed with a first-round bye. Rolesville (7-2-1) is the No. 4 seed in 8A, also with a bye, after a 52-0 win at Enloe. That leaves Heritage, the No. 15 seed in 7A, hosting North Brunswick on Friday, and the rain should clear out before kickoff. The Cougars and Rams play again November 13. On Saturday, Duke visits NC State for the Wolfpack's Military Appreciation game, and the Canes, first in the Metro, host Chicago that night.
