Good morning, W.Y.R. neighbors!
Big fall-kickoff Saturday ahead. Downtown Wake Forest hosts the Fall HerbFest on South White Street all weekend (Saturday 9 to 6, Sunday 10 to 4), and Joyner Park throws its 20th Good Neighbor Day from 1 to 4 with free hot dogs, a DJ, kids activities, and the Good Neighbor of the Year awards. Youngsville’s Saturday belongs to Bud’s Tavern: a vendor market from 10 to 4, a $20-entry Wing Cook-Off for the local food pantries at noon, and Carolina Soulmates on the patio at 1, and Hill Ridge Farms opens pumpkin season the same morning. Sunday, White Street Brewing throws its 14th anniversary party from noon to 4 with cellar pours and a commemorative glass for the first 300 through the door. Rolesville gets the best Friday night of the month, with Zootopia 2 on the big screen at Mill Bridge Nature Park at sunset and the Rams’ home opener against Corinth Holders across town. And yes, hockey is back: the Stanley Cup champion Hurricanes play their first game at Lenovo Center since the parade on Tuesday night, a preseason tilt against Florida.
In today’s edition of The WYRe:
HerbFest downtown and Good Neighbor Day at Joyner Park make Saturday a two-stop day in Wake Forest
Rolesville’s Friday: Zootopia 2 at Mill Bridge and the Rams’ home opener
Youngsville’s Saturday: Bud’s vendor market and Wing Cook-Off, plus Hill Ridge Farms opens pumpkin season
Weather for the week, sports, live music, and more!
Let’s get to it.

THE DIGEST

🌿 Fall HerbFest
📍 530 S White St, Downtown Wake Forest | Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20 | Saturday 9 AM to 6 PM, Sunday 10 AM to 4 PM | FREE
The longest-running herb festival in the country comes back for its fall edition, 25-plus years and counting on South White Street. Expect certified-organic herbs and vegetable starts, heirloom varieties, fall perennials, and a whole lot of mums, plus the usual herb-curious crowd trading tips on what to plant now for a spring payoff. Go early Saturday for selection, or go Sunday for the better weather: Saturday carries a slight storm chance, Sunday is mostly sunny. And Sunday has a bonus a block away: White Street Brewing celebrates 14 years from noon to 4 with once-a-year vintage pours from the cellar, live music all afternoon, and a commemorative pint glass for the first 300 guests. Herbs in the morning, anniversary beer in the afternoon. Get More Info Here

🤝 Good Neighbor Day
📍 E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Rd, Wake Forest | Saturday, September 19 | 1 to 4 PM | FREE
Twenty years in, Good Neighbor Day is still the simplest good idea in town: the Human Relations Council feeds everybody free hot dogs, a DJ plays, the kids get activities, and around 2:30 the Good Neighbor of the Year awards go to one youth and one adult on the amphitheater stage. About 7,000 neighbors have come through since 2006. Pair it with HerbFest in the morning and you have a full Wake Forest Saturday without getting on Capital Boulevard. Get More Info Here

🍗 Youngsville Saturday: Bud’s Wing Cook-Off and Pumpkin Season Opens at Hill Ridge Farms
📍 Bud’s Tavern, 823 Youngsville Blvd; Hill Ridge Farms, 703 Tarboro Rd, Youngsville | Saturday, September 19 | Bud’s 10 AM to 4 PM, Hill Ridge 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM | Bud’s FREE to attend ($20 to enter the cook-off), Hill Ridge admission at the gate
Bud’s turns its parking lot and patio into Youngsville’s Saturday. The vendor market runs 10 to 4, the Wing Cook-Off goes noon to 4 with a $20 entry fee that benefits local food pantries (come hungry, the judging is the fun part), and Carolina Soulmates play the patio from 1 to 4. Friday night before, it’s Steak Dinner Friday, a $20 ribeye with baked potato and salad from 7 to 10 with live music at 7:30, and Sunday afternoon Mark Cimerro plays 2 to 5.
Meanwhile, Saturday is opening day for the Fall Pumpkin Festival at Hill Ridge Farms: wagon rides out to the pumpkin patch where every guest picks a free pumpkin with admission, plus the train, carousel, jump pillow, and the giant mountain slide. It runs Wednesday through Sunday, 9:30 to 6:30, through November 6, and tickets are gate-only (cash or card, no online sales), so get there before the afternoon rush. Get More Info Here

🎬 Movies at Mill Bridge: Zootopia 2
📍 Mill Bridge Nature Park Amphitheatre, 425 Nature Park Dr | Friday, September 18 | Showtime around 7:30 PM (sunset) | FREE
Rolesville Parks and Rec rolls the big screen out to the Mill Bridge amphitheatre for Zootopia 2, rated PG, with Chick-N-Que and Kona Ice parked nearby for dinner and dessert. Bring a blanket or low chairs and get there early for a good spot on the lawn. Honest weather note: Friday evening has a 51 percent chance of showers and storms, so keep an eye on Rolesville Parks and Rec for a rain call before you load the car. If it holds, this is the family Friday night of the month. Get More Info Here

🐛 BugFest Turns 30
📍 NC Museum of Natural Sciences, 11 W Jones St, Downtown Raleigh | Saturday, September 19 | 10 AM to 7 PM | FREE
The biggest free family day of the fall in downtown Raleigh celebrates its 30th year with the theme “Hoppers”: treehoppers, planthoppers, and leafhoppers, with the red-banded leafhopper as this year’s featured bug. More than 100 exhibits fill Jones and Edenton Streets and Bicentennial Plaza, the Stag Beetle Battles and the Roachingham 500 return, Cafe Insecta serves actual bug dishes from local chefs, and there’s a 5 PM birthday toast with cake and live music. Expect the streets around the museum to be closed and use the downtown decks. Get More Info Here

🏈 SPORTS 🏒
Hockey Is Back: The Champs Skate at Lenovo Center Tuesday
For the first time since the Stanley Cup parade rolled down Fayetteville Street, the Hurricanes play a game at Lenovo Center. It’s preseason, so expect prospects and a few veterans getting their legs back, but Tuesday night against the Florida Panthers (the team the Canes replaced as champions) is the first live look at the roster that will raise the banner on opening night, Tuesday, September 29 at 5 PM on ESPN, also against Florida. The exhibition slate opens Sunday in Sunrise, then Tuesday in Raleigh, then a Thursday “home” game in Greensboro at the new ECHL affiliate’s arena. Friday belongs to high school football: Rolesville finally opens conference play at home against Corinth Holders after a three-week layoff, Wake Forest (2-2, fresh off a 49-14 rout of Wakefield) heads to Durham to face 3-1 Hillside, and Heritage (1-3, after a 28-25 overtime heartbreaker at Williams) hosts Holly Springs. Saturday the ACC gets real: UNC (2-0) opens league play at Clemson at noon on ESPN, NC State (1-1, after hanging 73 on Richmond) visits Vanderbilt at 12:45 on SEC Network, and Duke (2-0) hosts Stanford at 4 on The CW. The Panthers, coming off a 59-37 loss to the Bears, visit Atlanta Sunday at 1 on FOX. Friday’s forecast has storms by kickoff, so the bleachers are a poncho situation.
