Long weekend ahead, and the calendar knows it. Wake Forest closes out summer the right way Sunday evening with Concerts in the Park at Joyner Park (ACE Party Band, food trucks, and the 15th annual Wake Forest Unplugged games on the lawn), Bud’s Tavern in Youngsville stacks three straight days of music from Friday through Sunday, and all three of our high schools play Friday night, with Heritage and Rolesville both under their own lights. Downtown Raleigh throws its free two-day African American Cultural Festival Saturday and Sunday.
One honest heads-up: Thursday and Friday are forecast at 98 and 99, Friday night and Saturday carry storm chances, and then Sunday and Labor Day cool off into the mid-80s.

The Town’s end-of-summer tradition returns to the amphitheater by the pecan grove. ACE Party Band headlines, a Top 40 to Motown to beach to country cover machine led by vocalist AftanCi, and from 5 to 7 the Parks and Rec Advisory Board runs the 15th annual Wake Forest Unplugged: organized lawn games and activities designed to get everyone off their phones for a couple of hours. Bring a blanket or chairs and a picnic, or hit the trucks: Safari Eatz, Raleigh Savor, George’s Authentic South Philly Steaks, Bobasaur Tea, and Dusty Donuts are all scheduled. Leashed pets welcome; no alcohol. If the weather turns, the Town posts a call by 3 PM Sunday and can move the show into the Joyner Park Community Center. Second concert is Sunday the 13th with The Band Next Door.

Youngsville’s living room is booked solid for the long weekend. Friday is a DJ night starting at 7, Saturday brings singer-songwriter John Weber for the late set, and Sunday afternoon Grant Paxton plays the 2 to 5 slot, which is exactly the right time for a patio beer before the work week (that isn’t coming, because Monday’s a holiday). Bud’s September calendar is stacked past this weekend too: steak dinner Fridays start the 11th, and the Wing Cook-Off and vendor market land Saturday the 19th. And if karaoke is more your speed, Burnt Barrel down the road does its first-Friday karaoke night Friday at 7.

Downtown Raleigh’s Labor Day weekend tradition takes over Fayetteville Street for two days of visual art, music, theatre, dance, and a full vendor village, all free and all outdoors. It’s one of the best people-watching weekends of the year in the Triangle and easy to pair with a downtown lunch. Bring water and a hat, and if Saturday’s storms show up, Sunday’s the safer day.

Paramore’s frontwoman brings her solo show to Walnut Creek on a Wednesday, which is either a problem or a permission slip depending on how you feel about Thursday mornings. This is the worth-the-drive show of the week. Standard amphitheater rules: hydrate, leave early for the lot, and have a lawn plan if the weather looks shaky.

Town of Wake Forest offices are closed Monday, September 7. Curbside trash, recycling, and yard waste are suspended Monday, and collection runs one day late all week (Friday’s route gets picked up Saturday). Yard waste resumes Tuesday at 7 AM. Friday Night Lights, Three Ways
All three of our schools play Friday night, and two of them are at home, so you can pick your stadium. Heritage (1-1) hosts Leesville Road at 7, looking to bounce back from a rough night at Millbrook, and the Rolesville Rams (0-2) welcome perennial 4A power Richmond Senior to Rolesville at 7:30 in their first home game of the year. The Wake Forest Cougars (1-1), fresh off beating Leesville Road, make the short trip to Millbrook at 7. Friday’s forecast has storms creeping in late afternoon, so pack a poncho for the bleachers.
Saturday, the college slate is quiet locally: the Heels have a bye after a W in Ireland against TCU, and the Pack are off until their Friday night home opener against Richmond on the 11th, so the defending ACC champion Blue Devils get the spotlight with their home opener against Tulane at 3:30 on ACC Network.
