Good morning, W.Y.R. neighbors!

Friday is going to make you choose: Friday Night on White is back downtown with The Amazing Lounge Lizards, and about two miles away, Trentini Stadium hosts the High School OT Jamboree, four straight preseason games, including our own Cougars against #7 Cardinal Gibbons. It is the unofficial first night of football season in town, for fifteen bucks. Then Saturday gives you a full day of it: Compass Rose runs Scrumfest from noon to nine with nine bands and no cover, while Blackbird fills the afternoon with cornhole for a good cause. Thursday is quieter and worth it, with Chapel Hill songwriter Florence Dore playing the Listening Room.

In today’s edition of The WYRe:

  • Four preseason football games land at Wake Forest High on Friday night

  • The Amazing Lounge Lizards headline Friday Night on White downtown

  • Nine bands play Scrumfest at Compass Rose, free all day Saturday

  • Weather for the week, sports, live music, and more!

Let's get to it.

THE DIGEST

🎸 Friday Night on White: The Amazing Lounge Lizards 📍 South White Street, Downtown Wake Forest | Friday, August 14 | 6 to 9 PM | FREE

Downtown’s street party is back, and The Amazing Lounge Lizards bring the kind of set that gets grandparents and seven-year-olds moving in the same three square feet. Free, outdoors, and the whole block turns into the living room. Two things worth knowing: it is the same night as the jamboree, so pick your Friday night activity.

🏈 HighSchoolOT Jamboree at Trentini Stadium 📍 Wake Forest High School, 420 W Stadium Dr, Wake Forest | Friday, August 14 | First kickoff 6 PM | $15 presale, $20 at the gate

Four preseason games, one stadium, one night, and it is happening right here. The headliner is #22 Wake Forest against #7 Cardinal Gibbons at 8 PM, with Franklinton taking on South Johnston at 7 and Garner meeting Northern Nash to close it out at 9. If you have been waiting for football weather, you will not get it (see the forecast below), but you will get four games’ worth of it under the lights before the season officially starts.

🌽 Hops for Hope Cornhole Tournament 📍 Blackbird Brewery, 3608 Rogers Branch Rd #101, Wake Forest | Saturday, August 15 | 2 to 8 PM | $30 per two-person team

The second annual Hops for Hope runs all afternoon at Blackbird, with proceeds going to Children’s Flight of Hope. Chick & Danger play from 2 to 5 while the brackets run, so even if your toss is more hope than hops you can post up with a beer and make an afternoon of it. Grab a partner and register, or just come watch and donate.

🎒 Back-to-School Weekend: Wildberry Bash and the Hope House Backpack Giveaway 📍 Two stops, Friday and Saturday | FREE

School is nearly back, so the town is doing what it does. Wildberry throws its Back-to-School Bash Friday from 10 AM to 1 PM at 3319 Heritage Trade Drive, and Saturday morning Hope House hands out book bags from 10 AM to noon at 334 North Allen Road. Both are free, both are aimed squarely at families, and the Hope House giveaway is the kind of thing worth sharing with a neighbor who could use it.

🎶 Scrumfest: Nine Bands, No Cover 📍 Compass Rose Brewery, 355 Rogers Rd, Wake Forest | Saturday, August 15 | 12 to 9 PM | FREE

Compass Rose is handing Saturday over to the music: nine bands across a bunch of genres, nine hours, cold drinks all day, and no cover to walk in. Event merch will be on hand. This is the kind of thing you drop in on twice, once in the afternoon with the family and again after dinner when the sun is off the patio, and it pairs neatly with the cornhole tournament down the road.

📰 TOWN NEWS

Nominate a good neighbor by Sunday. Wake Forest’s Human Relations Council is taking youth and adult nominations for the 17th Annual Good Neighbor of the Year Awards through August 16. If someone on your street has been quietly making the place better, this is the week to say so.

The urban forest survey closes Friday. The town is building a new Urban Forest Management Plan and wants resident input on how the tree canopy gets managed. The online survey is open through August 14.

Youngsville has a new program coming for cards and company. The town is launching Youngsville Cards & Friends, a standing get-together for card games and conversation.

Heads up, tennis players: Flaherty Park’s tennis courts close August 24 for a major renovation, so get your last sets in over the next week and a half.

🏈 SPORTS 🏈

High School Football Is Kicking Off

The high school season does not officially open for another two weeks, but Friday night Trentini Stadium hosts the HighSchoolOT Jamboree, and four teams get a live rehearsal in front of a real crowd. The matchup to watch is #22 Wake Forest against #7 Cardinal Gibbons, which is a genuine measuring stick before the Cougars’ season opener. Gates and concessions run all evening, tickets are $15 presale through GoFan or $20 at the gate, and the heat will still be sitting on the field at kickoff, so bring water.
